Vision Can Take a House from Drab to Fab

I had a consultation at a house that looks really dreadful.  I venture to say that it will have little appeal to a potential buyer.  It shows as dark and dated.  Most buyers don't have the vision to take it to the next level.

I've had the privilege working with Maria Killam (Color Me Happy blog) since I first considered writing "An Affection for Staging".  She is one talented gal. Maria moved last year and readers followed all the changes she made to her 'new' house. The house I consulted on, had an similar floor plan (no fireplace, though) and design.  I recalled the spectacular job Maria achieved on her similarly dated house.  Maria's renovation is FABULOUS.

Compare Maria's beautiful rooms to the house I consulted on.  Can you visualize the update?

Remove the railings, install laminate wood flooring throughout, a fresh paint color and the house takes on a whole new vibe!  Steal Maria's superb decorating details and you have a Show House!

It simply was not in the budget for the seller's to update. Wish there was an app for guiding buyer's on how relatively simple these changes would be to make.

  1. Unfortunately most buyers don't realize the importance of "Staging". They want to put their home on the Market, sell it, As Is, and not add a penny! I see it over and over. The saddest situation is when they loose out on the opportunity to purchase the house of their dreams...waiting for their present home to SELL!

    1. I agree Patty. People can't afford double mortgages. If only they would listen to the professionals...

  2. I'm a huge fan of Maria's work too and her living room is gorgeous. Did you show the sellers those photos? I wouldnt' want to sell my home if it went from that drab to Maria's fabulously light living room! Such a shame that people don't have vision.

And what do you do working with Maria? You really are in the big leagues, my friend!!

    1. I didn't show the sellers the pictures. I knew going into it their was no budget. I was hired only to give a report. I'm trying to figure out how I can train realtors on the options for properties so they can include a vision board with their listings. (Figure that one out and let me know!)
I HIRED Maria to help me develop my blog. I think she is the epitome of managing every aspect of her blog and business. She is a great coach. I am currently going to Summer School online with Maria!

  3. Shoot...the railings are distracting...they should of called you when they bought the place... they could of been living in a home that looked like Maria's...hopefully they will at least paint them white.

    1. I didn't suggest that they paint them white Taylor. I may be mistaken but I didn't want to draw attention to them! The owner had lots of other rooms that had to be painted. Have to pick my battles, ya know!
