New Hardwood Floors!

House Beautiful

We are getting new hardwood floors!  I am crazy-over-the-moon-excited; the Cowboy--not so much. He doesn't like his world rocked.  The installation means our lives will be topsy turvy for a while.  Three rooms of furniture (and 2 overflowing closets) must be totally evacuated.  The new floors are scheduled to be installed in a couple of weeks.

The foyer and family room have 2 1/2" inch oak.  The dated wood floors have the original honey-orange stain from 1985.  The oak will be striped and stained to match the new floors in the living room and master.

Chestnut Stain?
My plan is to go with the same oak planks and use a medium chestnut stain.  Our kitchen has dark Chestnut cabinets.  I would love the dark chestnut for the hardwoods.  However, we have pets, rowdy friends, rowdy friends with dogs, and a grandchild.  Also, our house has many windows and skylights which bleach stain.

Do I go for beauty or function.  What do you think?  The living room and family room adjoin the kitchen.  This is an example of the color of the kitchen cabinets.

Yeah, I know the darker looks prettier......

  1. Oh boy, without really "standing" in the spaces I am having a hard time advising. Overall, the general idea would be to have them all the same color, to create a better flow.
I know you with all your insight you will choose what's best for you! Trust yourself and your judgement, girl.....you are good!!!

    1. Patty, I always question my decisions in my own home. Easy for clients--harder for me! Thanks for the vote of confidence.

    1. Brooke, I've been living with wall-to-wall Berber for 15 years. I am so ready to pull that stuff up I can hardly stand it!

  3. I actually like the lighter chestnut with the darker cabinets. I think it will be better flow for the entire house if it's all the same colour. But you would definitely know better than I.

So exciting!!! Your husband will get over the work, they always do.

    1. Thanks Heather, I do think the lighter floor will better suit the rooms. I have tile in the kitchen so it won't be too close to the darker cabinets. I hope my husband is not too rattled by the displacement of his life for a few weeks...we'll see.

  5. You should definitely go for function. You do have pets, and they tend to leave markings and fur all over the flooring. If choosing beauty over function means cleaning your floor more than usual because it would always look dirty, then might as well forget it.
